The largest community on Oahu's windward side, Kaneohe (meaning "bamboo man" in Hawaiian) is a sprawling community with malls, car dealerships, and a few worthwhile restaurants. At the base of the Koolau Range, Kaneohe sees a lot more rain than neighboring Kailua and is the greener for it. Two noteworthy sights take advantage of their proximity to the mountains: the Byodo-In Temple and Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden.
