Why We Like It

Its hard to beat Hotel Wiechmann’s location on pretty Prinsengracht, and while the hotel is dated, there’s heart here.

Fodor's Expert Review

A maze of hallways through three canalside buildings at this charming family-run hotel leads to guest rooms of wildly varying sizes. Delightful personal touches include a teapot collection, Delft-blue tiles, and fresh flowers everywhere.

You Should Know There is no elevator, and the stairs are narrow and steep. Considering the largely older clientele, this may be an issue for some.

Room

These are plainly decorated with quilted bedspreads, floral drapes, dark brown wood furniture. Some rooms have large leaded glass windows and lovely water views (in some rooms).

Bathroom

Small and simple, with white and maroon tiles, and basic amenities.

Lobby

As the hotel was once known as Boddy's Music Inn in the 1970s and hosted touring musicians including the Sex Pistols and Emmylou Harris, you'll find a gold record displayed in the lobby, along with a suit of armor, a grandfather clock, and plenty of antique tchotchkes.

Tip Help yourself to free hot drinks and candy.

Dining

There is no on-site restaurant, but a complimentary breakfast is served in a corner room with views onto the Prinsengracht canal.

Drinking

There is no in-house bar.

Getting Around

You’re very well situated in the Canal Ring, near the Jordaan and 9 streets, with easy access to public transport.

Restaurants

To try light, modern Dutch cuisine, head to Lt. Cornelis (8-minute walk), which perfectly juxtaposes past and present in its food and décor. Sustainable seafood specialist, The Seafood Bar (8-minute walk), offers smoked fish varieties from Volendam, delicately-battered fish and chips, four varieties of oyster and platters of fruits de mer. And, La Perla Pizzeria (12-minute walk), is famed for its authentic wood-burning oven Pizza Margherita, and convivial vibe.

Bars

If you’re looking for local beers and the cosy atmosphere of a typical Dutch “brown café”, there’s Café De Doffer (1-minute walk). Bar Oldenhof (3-minute walk) in the nearby Jordaan offers a wide range of whiskeys and reasonably-priced cocktails (by Amsterdam standards, that is) in a bar with a nouveau-gentlemen’s club feel.
